“I Love…” A List Of Lovelies From The Shores Of Lake Superior

I love…

--

…the mixture of bird song and waves.

…the light lines in the water.

…the hundreds of little stones, all unique and beautiful.

…the pinecones on the sand.

…the driftwood on the sand, bleached white from time and sun.

…the hot sand underfoot.

…the black sand that’s far finer and softer than the white.

…the tiny movements of sand from waves.

…the half blue clear sky and the obvious line of a low-pressure system moving in with puffy clouds.

…the island lighthouse far on the horizon that never seems to be the same size from one day to another.

…the hazy blending of sky and cloudline past what we can see.

…the feeling of wiggling your toes in the sand.

…the cold and harsh breath when you first dunk into Superior.

…the melting away of aches and complaints when you come up from her chilly surface.

…the constant but subtle breeze that keeps the flies at bay.

…the short-lived popping bubbles at the waterline.

…the hundreds of blue hues as far as the eye can see.

…the little flecks of turquoise when light hits a wave just right.

…the merganser floating out in the surf.

…the chill in the air when the sun disappears behind dark clouds.

…the lack of any smell besides clean lake air.

…the summer next to this sea.
